A New Year:  Becoming the Man I Desire to Be.

A New Year:  Becoming the Man I Desire to Be.

by Don Stubbs on January 16, 2022

If you're anything like me, you're probably thinking to yourself- What do I want to accomplish? What to I want to do in 2022? These are some of the questions that tend to occupy my mind, these are the type of questions that I spend much of my energy thinking about.

For me, making a difference really matters. I want to be a person that impacts the people around me. I want to grow as a disciple of Jesus Christ. I want to grow as a friend, as a student, as a preacher, as a teacher, and as a leader. I want to love people, no matter where they are, or what they have done, and this takes effort.

So as I thought about how I was feeling, I asked myself - what does the Bible have to say about these things? As I searched the scriptures, 1 Timothy 2 1-4 jumped out at me.

1st Timothy 2:1-4 First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way. This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior,

As I read these verses, I realized that these verses present the type of man that I desire to be.

If I want to make an  impact, I have to become a man of prayer, supplication, intercession, and thanksgivings for all people. Yes, I will have to ask the God of creation to do what only He can do. Only He can help us to reach people and to help us see that He loves us and has great plans for us. Plans to prosper and not to harm us, plans to give us a hope and a future.

Jeremiah 29 11-13 (11 For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. 12 Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will hear you. 13 You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart.)

I will only become the person I want to be, through becoming a man of great prayer, a man that seeks God in humility an earnest godly request. Seeking God on the behalf of myself and those around me, seeking Him with my whole heart knowing that He will hear me when I seek Him this way. Asking God to change all of us, for His glory and our betterment.

I must pray for those who are in leadership, so we may lead quiet and peaceful lives. Lives that speak of Jesus Christ. Lives that show the world who God is and what He is like, so that they may know Him. Yes godly, dignified lives, I know I’m not there yet, but this is the life God has called me to, and in my inner man, it is the life I want to live.

If I truly want to love people in a way that honors God and them, I have to understand that God loves them with a radical and self sacrificing love. That alone can truly impact and change them forever. I cannot  be half hearted in this effort, but must give it my full attention. It must become my aim in life to live this way.

To sum it up, I must become more and more like Jesus Christ. I must ask God for the heart and mind of Christ. I must seek God with all that I am, and ask Him to make me the person He wants me to be. I must submit my will to His, and above all I must love Him. Yes, this is the man I desire to be.

Lord, help me to become all you would have me to be.
